The suite that started as a stall
In 2017 Mara was recutting friends’ wedges in a rented stall with a space heater and a plate that iced over if the door stayed open. By 2019 the stall had a lease on Main Street, a harbor clock that skipped Tuesday, and a name that sounded like a weather report.
Why Buffalo, not a suburb range
Lake-effect does not care about a fitting that was built for Carolina bermuda. Golfers here play ice in January, sponge in April, and bent that bakes by the Fourth. A downtown suite means you can walk in after a Saturday dump without driving to a warehouse park that pretends all turf is one turf.
We stayed on Main because the glass shows the weather. If it is dumping, we say so on the sheet. A sit that ignores the window is a sit that will lie on Sunday.
What we will not become
A chain. A catalog wall. A place that sells a “tour grind” to someone who plays nine holes on a municipal after a thaw. The wheel is for the surface outside, not for a photograph.
The name Grind Bay is literal: a bay on a Great Lake city, a grind that waits for the stain. If that sounds small, it is. Small is how you keep the clock honest.
2019 to now
Dory joined the first winter. Halina took the gap desk in 2021 after we kept seeing the same collision between new pitching irons and untouched 52s. The hazard-yellow tape, the ice rail, the weekend-first hours — those were not a brand exercise. They were how the room already looked.
